“Good health is vital if children and young people are to enjoy their childhood and achieve their full potential. If we can establish good habits in childhood, this will provide the basis for lifelong health and wellbeing. To improve children’s health we will publish a Child Health Strategy in 2008, produced jointly between the Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Department of Health.”
— Ed Balls MP, Launch of The Children’s Plan, 11th December 2007
Overview
When the Children’s Plan was unveiled a year ago, it set out the Government’s vision for improving the lives of children, young people and families by the year 2020. At the same time, the Children’s Secretary Ed Balls, also announced that a comprehensive Child Health Strategy would be published in 2008, the first of its kind.
The eagerly awaited Child Health Strategy is expected to outline key measures to deliver better health and well-being outcomes for all children, from birth right through to early adulthood. It is intended to not only strengthen the broad visions set out in the Children’s Plan and the Every Child Matters Agenda, but also build on the Children’s National Service Framework and the Child Health Promotion Programme, which was released earlier this year and intends to:
- Provide greater emphasis on promoting the health and well-being of children in the early stages – pregnancy and the first five years of life
- Encourage partnership working between different agencies on local service development (e.g. general practice and children's centres)
- Focus services on changing public health priorities - obesity, breast feeding, social and emotional development
This major one-day national conference, hosted by the Centre for Parliamentary Studies, will provide a timely opportunity for local practitioners to assess the key delivery objectives of the Child Health Strategy. The conference will explore how the Strategy can be implemented effectively through an analysis of the three key age groups: birth to five, five to twelve and adolescent years. Delegates will have the opportunity to debate, share good practice and network with colleagues from across the children’s services, education, local authority and government landscape.
